What is a Travel Plan?

A Travel Plan is a document which expresses initiatives, activities and targets aimed at increasing the use of sustainable transport by an organisation. These may be the promotion of cycling, car share programs, flexible working, awareness of public transport infrastructure, and reduction of carbon emissions. The main emphasis of a Travel Plan is to change the mode of transport by which people travel to and from a site. A site may be one of a place of work, a school, a higher education institution, a hospital or a residential development.

Why is monitoring Travel Plans important?

Local authorities are under increasing pressure to optimise existing transport infrastructure by promoting sustainable and active travel methods, and especially in major conurbation areas, reducing pollution from vehicles. Both the public and private sector have responded to this challenge by implementing Travel Plans on a voluntary basis, or as part of a planning approval process. iTRACE handles most of the routine admin and reporting that travel planners would be required to do so they have more time to spend working with the business community recruiting travel plan sites and building support for smarter choices.
